A variety of processes may interfere with sleep and wakefulness in older adults. As we age, there is an increased incidence of medical problems. In general, people with poor health or chronic medical conditions have more sleep problems. Pain, arthritis, asthma, diabetes, nighttime heartburn, a frequent need to go to the bathroom, are just some of the factors that can cause frequent awakenings. Discomfort and pain may also prevent an easy return to sleep.
In addition, medications can affect sleep by making it either easier or more difficult to sleep.
Social schedules and activities often change with age and can also affect sleep. When we engage in less activity, we may feel less tired.
